Ski Weekend in the Austrian Alps

A long weekend in the Austrian Alps — four days, three of them bluebird, and legs that complained loudly by the end.

First lifts

We based ourselves in the Zillertal and went straight for the glacier. The panorama from the top station is the kind that makes you go quiet for a minute — an unbroken sea of white peaks in every direction, with the valley floor so far below it looks painted.

Hut evenings

The evenings belonged to the hut: snow piling softly on the roof, smoke from the chimney, schnitzel and stories from skiers who've been coming for thirty years. This is the part of skiing trips that never makes the highlight reel and is somehow the best part.
